Journal kept by S.R. Bond on the Fisk Expedition of 1862, [19--].

Photostatic copy of a journal (June 1862-Jan. 1, 1863) kept by Samuel R. Bond, secretary to the James L. Fisk expedition protecting emigrants to the gold fields of the Dakota Territory and the western United States. The expedition started at St. Paul and ended at Walla Walla, Washington Territory. The journal also details Bond's seagoing return trip via Oregon, British Columbia, California, Mexico, and Panama to New York City, arriving there on Jan. 1, 1863. The journal describes the expedition's officers and emigrants; towns, forts, and trading posts passed through; topography and weather; traveling conditions; gold prospecting; and related events.

Fisk was born in New York of Irish extraction, the eldest of six sons of John B. and Jerusha T. Fisk. He worked as a "raftsman, farmer, carriage maker, and newspaperman" for the Daily Courier of Lafayette, Indiana. Four of his five brothers also became newspapermen. Becoming engrossed with the western frontier, he moved to White Bear Lake, Minnesota, sometime in the 1850s, married Lydia Burson, and started farming. In 1857, he was in the expedition of William H.
